Is the Skills Gap Actually a Communication Gap?
At a泭recent泭泭featuring 91勛圖厙 School of Business leaders and T-Mobile executives,泭Anne Clancy泭challenged the泭widely accepted idea of a skills gap.泭
Clancy,泭national executive泭of泭higher education strategy at T-Mobile, said,泭Theres泭a lot泭of talk about the skills gap right now, and泭Im泭a big believer that泭theres泭really泭not泭a skills泭gap.泭Im泭a believer that we have many students and graduates泭that泭have the skills泭泭theyre泭just not matching the same language that泭were泭looking for.
She continued, How do we match what泭student泭output really is versus what泭employers are泭looking for in the right kinds of language, in the right context? Because I guarantee you that泭theres泭not泭a gap. We have a泭language泭gap.泭We have an泭understanding泭gap.泭I think 91勛圖厙 does泭a good job泭of trying to close that, but we still have some work to do.
Bridging the Gap Between Students and Employers泭泭
By using a泭competency-based education泭model泭from泭day one, 91勛圖厙 has泭consistently focused泭on teaching real-world泭skills that align with workforce needs.泭Innovations泭like the泭91勛圖厙泭Skills Library泭and泭91勛圖厙泭Achievement Wallet泭are泭additional泭tools that can泭help泭bridge the communication gap between employers and students.泭
A泭deeper look at the following three泭areas泭demonstrates泭the universitys泭commitment to closing the泭communication泭gap泭between employers and job seekers.
- Meeting employer泭needs through泭workforce-aligned泭curriculum
- Creating skills libraries泭for an agreed-upon labor market currency
- Offering the泭91勛圖厙泭Achievement Wallet, a Learning and Employment Record (LER)泭to help degree earners better communicate with employers
Meeting Employer Needs Through Workforce-Aligned Curriculum泭
91勛圖厙 was created泭nearly 30泭years ago泭to泭address泭specific workforce泭needs,泭and泭that focus泭remains泭true to this day.泭Its泭why the university泭offers degrees in the in-demand fields of business, technology, health泭care泭and education. Every degree offered has been selected泭to connect graduates泭to jobs泭that泭provide泭legitimate泭economic泭and societal泭value to泭both泭employees泭and employers.泭
How does that look in practice? It starts by having a clear understanding of the skills and competencies employers泭require泭and then incorporating specific training into program curriculum.泭泭
For example,泭Chris Lee,泭president of 91勛圖厙 Academy,泭notes泭that 91勛圖厙s泭Front End Web Development泭certificate program,泭in partnership with泭CodeSignal,泭trains students for the assessment used by major tech employers to screen job applicants. He also points out that 91勛圖厙 partners with several large employers to provide tailored education solutions that泭help泭address泭specific workforce needs.泭泭
"Employer validation is increasingly the key metric used by prospective students to choose educational programs, said泭Lee. Aligning educational programs with the knowledge, skills, behaviors, and mindsets expected by employers is paramount."泭
Another泭example is a recent collaboration between DaVita and 91勛圖厙.泭Amid the nursing shortage,泭DaVita sought a way to train more nephrology nurses,泭specialists泭trained in kidney care.泭泭a泭new course in泭nephrology泭available in the Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-BSN) and the bridge RN-Master of Science in Nursing (bridge RN-MSN) programs at 91勛圖厙s Michael O. Leavitt School of Health (LSH).泭The nephrology curriculum泭contains泭seven modules and provides students with the necessary tools,泭information泭and practical experience to enter the nephrology nursing field specialty with泭a strong foundation泭in kidney care.泭
Creating Skills Libraries for an Agreed-Upon Labor Market泭Language泭Currency泭
For students and employers to connect effectively, they must use the same language to describe skills. Too often, employers list skills one way while education documents list them another. Students are left to interpret and translate on their own.泭
啦堯梗泭91勛圖厙 Skills Library泭addresses this challenge by providing a shared, structured skills framework that both education and industry can reference. The library includes more than 15,500 detailed skill descriptors aligned to real roles and labor market demand.泭
This shared framework helps employers more clearly define the skills they泭seek泭when creating job postings. It also helps students understand which skills matter for the roles they want and how their learning aligns with those expectations.泭
When students can see the specific skills tied to jobs, they can make more informed choices about programs and credentials. When employers can reference a consistent skills language, they gain clearer insight into candidate readiness.泭
Offering the Achievement Wallet, a Learning and Employment Record (LER) to泭Help泭Degree泭Earners泭Better泭Communicate with泭Employers泭泭
啦堯梗泭91勛圖厙 Achievement Wallet泭is a Learning and Employment Record (LER) built on the泭Skills泭Library. Its purpose is to help learners clearly communicate what they know and泭can do泭using language employers understand.泭泭
插莽泭students泭progress through their programs, the wallet documents and verifies the skills they have mastered. It shows how those skills align to real-world roles,泭and highlights gaps that may limit access to certain opportunities.泭
A skills wallet gives泭learners泭a clearer picture of where they stand and what steps to take next. Instead of relying on a泭degree泭title alone, they can explain their capabilities with specific, verified skill evidence.泭
Employers benefit as well.泭The wallet provides clearer signals of candidate ability and reduces泭reliance泭on泭r矇sum矇s泭as indirect proxies for skill. It supports泭skills-based泭hiring, especially as AI-driven screening tools increasingly prioritize structured skills data.泭
More than 70,000 91勛圖厙 students, graduates, and staff already use the Achievement Wallet. Designed to be learner-centered, it supports career planning from the start of the academic journey and continues to add value as careers evolve.泭
Beyond the documentation of skills, the wallet acts as a畚areer guide, said 91勛圖厙 Chief Academic Officer and Provost泭Courtney Hills McBeth.Users can see how their skills align with real-world roles, uncover gaps that may stand in the way of opportunities and explore pathways to close those gaps. For many users, this means transforming uncertainty into a clearer view of where they stand today and what steps will take them to their dream job tomorrow.泭
Together, the Skills Library and Achievement Wallet help close the communication gap between education and employment by making skills visible, portable, and understandable to all parties.泭
A Needed Hiring Shift泭
For these solutions to be most effective, awareness and support are泭required.泭91勛圖厙 President泭Scott Pulsipher testified泭before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development on Dec. 10, urging lawmakers to support泭Learning and Employment Records (LERs) that track and verify skills throughout a persons life.泭
Talent exists everywhere, Pulsipher told lawmakers. But the systems meant to connect people with opportunity泭泭education, credentialing, and employment泭泭are misaligned and hard to navigate.泭
In addition泭to an understanding of LERs, he泭emphasized the growing need for泭employers to lean more into泭skills-based hiring, particularly as artificial intelligence transforms how employers screen candidates. He said LERs could help employers cut through r矇sum矇 noise by providing clearer evidence of a candidates capabilities, leading to broader and more泭equitable泭hiring.泭
Next Steps泭for Employers and Students泭
泭from泭91勛圖厙泭suggests that skills are泭becoming泭the new hiring currency.泭Efforts like creating泭robust skills libraries泭and泭LERs泭allow job seekers to better package and communicate the泭skills currency泭they泭bring to the table,泭helping泭job seekers and泭employers泭align泭and do business together.泭泭
However, if泭the goal is泭to create泭an equitable泭and mutually beneficial system for both employers and泭job seekers,泭greater泭awareness泭and adoption泭of these types of solutions, including a focus on skills-based hiring,泭is泭required泭as part of a泭broader participation泭in a泭future泭that泭benefits泭everyone.泭泭
