January is泭, a time to泭acknowledge泭and appreciate泭the泭impact泭mentors泭have泭personally and professionally泭on their mentees, and the significance mentoring has泭on society.泭Research and countless studies have泭demonstrated泭that mentors positively泭impact泭youth, college泭students泭and employees.
Think back for a moment泭on an influential mentor in your life.泭Perhaps泭it泭was a parent, family member, coach,泭teacher泭or supervisor.泭For me, it was Dr. Jim Kirk, founder and former泭director of the Human Resource Development program at Western Carolina University泭and泭advisor泭during my graduate studies at WCU.泭Dr. Kirk泭was the epitome泭of a泭skilled泭mentor.泭He modeled泭a unique blend泭of subject matter泭expertise,泭humility泭and a good dose of candor that many of us needed泭to hear but rarely ever泭do.泭
The word mentor泭comes from泭Greek mythology.泭Mentor泭was Odysseus's friend泭and was泭entrusted with泭educating his泭son Telemachus.泭Today, Merriam-Webster defines泭a泭mentor as泭a trusted counselor or guide.泭Synonyms for mentor include tutor and coach.
Inherent in that definition is the desire of the mentor to help泭their泭mentee grow in knowledge,泭experience泭and confidence. The relationship is not necessarily transactional; the泭mentors泭reward is seeing the success of their mentee.
Youth Mentoring
According to泭,泭having a good relationship with a mentor can have the following positive benefits for youth:
Increased high school graduation rates
Healthier relationships and lifestyle choices
Higher college enrollment rates泭
Stronger relationships with parents,泭teachers泭and peers
Stronger interpersonal skills
Lower usage of drugs and alcohol
Unfortunately, a 2023 national study泭conducted by泭泭shows that泭35% of young adults grow up without the support of any mentor.泭
College Mentoring
While the role of youth mentors泭is泭well known,泭the role of college泭mentors泭is less so.泭Beyond serving as an academic advisor who tells you what courses to take to graduate泭or泭how to improve your thesis, college mentors should泭equally泭have泭your泭career goals泭and aspirations泭in mind.
As the泭Southeast regional泭director for泭online泭nonprofit泭Western Governors University泭(with more than 3,200 active students in South Carolina),泭Ive泭seen firsthand how our program mentors work with students from day one through graduation to help them achieve their goals. Engaged and dedicated college mentors can provide the泭following support:
Support for growth in泭students泭fields泭of study,泭whether or not泭they have泭prior experience or泭college泭credits
Assistance泭with goal setting
Holding students accountable
Help with making professional connections
Discernment of learning strengths (e.g., visual, auditory, solitary vs. group, verbal, etc.).
Workplace Mentoring
How important is the role of mentors泭in business? Consider that泭泭in the U.S.泭have mentoring programs.泭
Here are just a few of the泭泭in the workplace:泭
Dramatically reduces staff turnover
Produces significant cost savings, particularly in turnover costs
Provides workers with the personal engagement they desire
Supercharges both personal and professional growth泭
Fosters泭a sense of泭belonging泭
A good mentor can泭genuinely泭change lives,泭position mentees for prolonged success, and泭provide a泭mentoring model we can泭use with泭others.泭Lets泭take a moment this month to recognize the outstanding mentors泭in our lives and泭encourage more individuals to take on this泭vital泭role泭to mentor youth, college泭students泭and employees.泭
